  1. FWIW I had a Pub League rules Blood Bowl team called “The Pheasant Pluckers’”

  2. Hey Guys,

I just listened to this episode while running some tests for my research and I wanted to leave a comment. My big question is that, if the 40K game had clear cut rules that allowed for MTG style tournaments, how would that detract from the “fun” of the hobby?

For instance, I have a friend who is into the MTG tournaments, but I and my friends are not. The fact that he is into this competitive scene doesn’t detract at all to the fun that we have when we play more casual games of MTG. In fact, it helps, because he clarifies bad habits/rulings that we play with so we can clearly understand ambiguous rules.

My point is simply that having clear cut rules (even if it is 200+ pages) would only enhance the hobby by encouraging all types of players to play. In no significant way would this reduce the “fun” of the hobby. Not to mention the incredible rules customer service that MTG has. Within 5-10 minutes you can get the ruling on any card in MTG.

  3. In my mind the only real difference is the mindset that is created to drive someone’s interest in the hobby by ‘clear cut’ vs ’slightly sloppy’ rules design.

By GW’s own admission, the 40k ruleset, at its core, is not intended for such competitive tournament play. I don’t disagree that it would be cool to have a ruleset as such, but i feel that doing it that way would detract from the thing that makes 40k as popular as it is.

And that is the depth and awesomeness of the 40k universe that has such cool character and background as a whole.

Having a looser ruleset encourages the creativity that is behind their design philosophy (make your own scenarios, fiddle with the rules). Whereas being black and white rules Nazis takes the flavour and pizang out of it, because a regular hobbyist will be encouraged to ‘play the rules’ and not ‘play the game’.

Hmmm, kinda rambling for a comment :P

    my 1.5c
